Dubai Busiest Airport for International Passengers in 1Q - Dubai is nu 's werelds grootste internationale luchthave

Wall Street Journal by Rory Jones - Dow Jones Nieuwsdienst by Bart Koster 28 Apr.14

Dubai International, the emirateís main airport and home to Emirates Airline, handled more than 18 million international passengers in the first quarter Ė making it the busiest airport globally for international passengers in the three-month period.

Dubai easily beat Londonís Heathrow Ė illustrating its growth as a transport hub, helped largely by the stellar expansion of Emirates Airline in less than 30 years of operations.

Heathrow, meanwhile, saw a total 16.1 million people pass through the airport in the same period, according to statements on the airportís website. Heathrow pipped Dubai last year to the top spot for international traffic, followed by Hong Kong and Paris, according to official figures from Airports Council International, a global trade body, which hasnít released first quarter figures yet.

Airport 1Q March February January

Dubai 18.3 6.3 5.6 6.4

LondonLHR 16.1 5.8 4.9 5.4

Hong Kong 15 5.1 4.8 5.1

Paris CDG 13.8 5 4.2 4.6

Singapore 13.2 4.5 4.1 4.6

Dubai Internationalís growth is being driven by Emirates and its strategy of using wide-body aircraft to connect passengers in Asia and Australasia with Europe and the U.S via a stop at home. The airline carried nearly 40 million passengers in its last fiscal year.

The airport may still be edged out by Heathrow for the full year, as Dubai International plans an 80-day improvement project on its two runways on May 1 that will reduce the number of flights at the airport by 24%, and impact Emirates full-year revenues by $272 million.

Dubai is nu 's werelds grootste internationale luchthaven

Maandag 28 april 2014
